Was Kanye trolling with “Facts”? He had to have been, right? We’re talking about an entire song with some subpar verses over a generic trap beat, dedicated to saying his sneakers are really popular. And it seems especially certain that “Facts” was some sort of palette cleanser at best, because, well, Mr. West just dropped a new song called “Real Friends” featuring Ty Dolla $ign— and dear Lord it is good. In fact, it sounds like “old Kanye” is back.
Though the song was taken down as soon as it was posted to West’s Soundcloud page, it’s likely that it will be posted again soon. In “un momento,” in fact, according to Kanye West:
(You didn’t hear this from us, but you can find the song and download it by Googling around a little bit.)
Casual rap fans (a.k.a. those who aren’t full-fledged Kanye obsessives) often stick to the common narrative that Kanye’s first three albums—The College Dropout, Late Registration, and Graduation—are better, and made by a different person than the one who made 808s & Heartbreak and Yeezus. That hypothesis is obviously questionable at best, but the point is that “Real Friends” sounds like it easily could have been on any one of those albums. And after a 2015 that included a lot of weird, not particularly awesome Kanye West music (“Only One,” “All Day”), this retro sound is more than welcome.
The second half of the track, “No More Parties in LA,” features Kendrick Lamar, and is apparently just a snippet of a longer song that one can only predict will appear on West’s forthcoming album, Swish. We’d say so far, the album is indeed hitting nothing but net.
Update: The official version of “Real Friends” can be heard on Kanye’s website here.
